Goal setting is something we do around this time of year but we forget about the one thing that we have in common that often get’s swept under the rug. Dreams. We all have them but all too often we don’t give ourselves the chance to live them.
There are the big dreams, you know… the ones we sometimes choose to keep to ourselves away from because they seem a bit unrealistic? And then there are smaller dreams, which you share more openly with other people when they ask you about your goals and ambitions.
It’s so important to be a dreamer. And when you dream… to dream BIG. It is the act of dreaming big that will propel us beyond what we feel is realistic or attainable. And, even if you fail, you were brave enough to give it a shot. And chances are, you’ll land somewhere a lot further than where you would’ve ended up if you didn’t take a shot at all.
I’m sure you’ve heard the term ”failing forward” well that is exactly what it means.
Dreams vs. Goals
Dreams are different from goals. You use your imagination to dream, you dream with purpose and soul. When you use your imagination, there are no limitations. Goals are like the stepping stones on the path to achieving your dreams. With goals, you have to be a bit more practical, realistic, actionable and measurable
You’ve also probably heard the terms S.M.A.R.T goals… but in case you haven’t heard what it stands for:
This is great but it’s not always enough… keep reading.
And as a spa owner, you already have some sort of idea of what you wish to accomplish. You probably have a few goals on your never-ending “to do” list collecting dust and just not getting done… no judgment just being real and trust me I am still guilty of this from time to time.
I want to share with you the real reason why this might be happening.
We all know that in order to make any sort of progress, you must think and act in a forward motion.
You want to expand your business and make more money right (get in line)?
But how do you get there? The truth is SMART goals alone just aren’t enough.
One of the biggest mistakes I see people making way too often is that while they may be creating great even inspiring goals… they don’t have a clear enough understanding of where they are in respect to where they want to go and… trust me that is a problem.
Before you actually forge ahead to conquer your goals… first, you need to slow down for a second and really take the time to reflect on your current situation.
I’m going to use a little traveling analogy to make this concept clearer for you. You have your car, a full tank of gas, and you start driving without knowing where you really want to go. Without a destination in mind, you’re really just driving aimlessly – maybe that’s fun for a bit but when it comes to business you kinda need to be super clear on where you’re headed.
Now let’s flip the coin on that analogy… what if you knew exactly where you needed to go and when you needed to be there but had no idea where you were or where you were starting from (of course suspending your belief for a second, pretending that maps, cell phones, and road signs don’t exist) how would you know which route to take, whether you should walk, drive or fly?
The main takeaway? It is equally as important to be super clear on where you are NOW as it is to be clear on where you are GOING.
Give me an amen if that makes sense!
Clarity is the key. With clarity, you give yourself the power to make informed decisions at all times when it comes to your business… or just about any other aspect of your life!
Now that you know the difference between dreaming big and goal setting… what’s next?
Is it really possible for you to make your dreams come true?
Yes! It’s absolutely possible for you to make your dreams become your reality!
You just need to let your dreams guide you in creating a foolproof plan with both short-term and long-term goals. Let me guide you through the key steps!
Get really specific on where you are going
It’s a lot easier to bridge the gap between your dream and your reality when you can answer these questions!
What does your dream really look like?
Visualize your dream as if it had already come true. How does it feel and what does it look like? Do you see anyone else in the picture helping you? What resources do you have?
What does success mean to you? How do you define it, and what is your metric system for measuring success? Are there certain conditions (short-term/long-term goals) you wish to meet along the way?
What is your deadline?
What is your timeline, for when you’ll plan out everything and when you want to achieve these things?
2. Understand where you are now
You need to reflect on your current situation, and you want to be completely honest with yourself. Identify your current situation and what you ultimately want to accomplish as a spa owner.
Figure out how your current situation is different from your desired situation. Find clarity by asking yourself a few introspective questions:
What is my current situation? How is my current situation different from where I want to be?
What are the challenges or obstacles that are keeping me from getting to where I want to go?
Which resources are available to me, that can be leveraged to help you achieve my goals for your spa business?
3. Create a plan
Now that you have a better understanding of where you are and where you are going, now set yourself up for success by creating a plan!
How do you create the best plan possible for your spa business? You reverse engineer it.
Simply put, don’t plan ahead… plan backward.
Identify the endgame. And now ask yourself, what is the one thing that needs to happen in order for you to get there? And what’s the step before that? Okay, now what’s the step before that? You get the picture. Keeping asking yourself this question until you get to a point where you start seeing how your dreams are entirely do-able from the place you’re standing in right now!
With this approach, I guarantee things will feel A LOT less overwhelming.
By creating a plan that makes everything more simple, you’ll be more driven and inspired to accomplish whatever’s on your list because they seem THAT MUCH more achievable!
4. Take action
Stop waiting for something to just miraculously happen.
Nothing is going to change in your current situation unless you take action and do the work!
You must make the conscious decision to take action. You are NOT going to let another year go by where you haven’t made a single step in the direction you wish to go right… so decide that there is no better than now to get started!
Whatever your current situation, you really are in full control when it comes to your future. The possibilities are endless when you open yourself up to seeing more opportunities. Turn your goals and your dreams into a reality!
You’re only one decision away from getting one step closer to achieving your goals and dreams.
5. Be resilient
Tackle your goals head-on, but never ever let yourself get discouraged!
Things don’t always go as planned. That’s life. Don’t let it push you off your goal getting bandwagon.
Success isn’t a straight line. There are a lot of twists and turns along the way. If things don’t work out exactly the way you wanted them to, IT’S OKAY.
It’s incredibly brave when someone takes the risk to accomplish their dreams. Encountering roadblocks here and there is inevitable when you’re on the path to achieving great things!
Acknowledge that something didn’t go exactly as planned, and go back to the drawing board. Re-evaluate your strategy and keep pushing forward!
You got this!
Achieving your dreams isn’t the hard part. Believing in yourself is.
Stop believing that you aren’t capable and worthy of making your dreams come true.
You have what it takes! And, you deserve it!
You have the steps… now do the work.
You would be pretty surprised what happens when you DO-THE-WORK.
It’s also important to realize that you’re not alone.
Take advantage of all the resources that are available for you! Because, finding the right resources to guide you through the entire process will save you A LOT of time, money, and heartache in the long run.
Making your goals a dreams a reality, require action, perseverance and patients. You’ve got this!
